The Apartment (1960)

by AArdvark » Sat Dec 24, 2022 10:52 am

In an attempt to pad out my Christmas shows folder on my external hard drive, I Googled a list of best Christmas movies. The Apartment popped up as a must-see-before-you-die Christmas movie so I grabbed it (illegally!)

So far my movie list has the following:

White Christmas
Holiday Inn ( which is just a proto-attempt at White Christmas, only in black and white and has Bing Crosby doing a blackface number; a must see. )
Die Hard ( yes, it's in the list )
The Thin Man
It's a Wonderful life

The Apartment has Jack Lemmon as a schlub who loans out his Manhattan apartment to his corporate superiors so they can have affairs. Lemmon hopes to work his way up the corporate ladder in this manner. Supposedly it's a romantic comedy but I feel attitudes have changed since 1960 (where it was OK, or even funny, to spank your wife for things like changing laundry detergent, sigh. )

Frankly I found it hard to watch. How anyone could let themselves be used in such a manner is beyond me. I'm not sure why it earned so many Academy Awards. I wouldn't have voted for it but I dislike movies in general so I'm not the best choice for a judge. Anyway, it's not going in my hard drive, even though it happens at Christmas.
