I keep hearing "genre smashing" associated with this movie and... It just feels like a somewhat clever cover for a music video.

They call me Baby Driver
And once upon a pair of wheels
I hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba
Scoot down the road
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
- Simon and Garfunkel, Baby Driver, from the Album Bridge Over Troubled Waters, January 1970

Baby Driver is written and directed by Edgar Wright, so there's pedigree there.

"Who the hell would watch a movie called Baby Driver.." I thought. RR delivers!

Saw Baby Driver last night and per the trailer, was expecting a heist film more akin to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, instead what I got was a highly stylized, music video like two hour film that incorporates a generic love story, at least to Deus Ex Machina moments, and a very flat story.

When I say flat, I mean the initial two or three main scenes of the film are just excuses for James Bond style car chases and then once the movie incorporates actual characterization, it starts to feel shallow and the characters stereotypical.

While I'd like to call the movie "fun," almost every movie released in the past five years could be characterized by fun or a popcorn flick, so at this point the genre and idea has been overplayed quite a bit.
