At times I felt the story was a little paint-by-numbers for a flick everyone gushed over so much. I mean, it's Rocky with drums, right? Or Full Metal Jacket except Gomer Pyle plays jazz instead of shooting himself in the face.
However, J.K. Simmons joins the ranks of the great all-time performances with this shit. Every frame he's not in the film, I'd give 2.5 stars. Every frame he IS in is fucking magical.
