The NHL lowered the odds of the worst team getting the first draft pick.
I have never understood that.
Credit football: the worst team picks first. There's no lottery. Lotteries for drafting are stupid. Like the fucking players who will lose their jobs when the kids come in aren't going to try hard.
If you finished last you USED to have a 25% chance at getting the first pick in the NHL. It's 20% now. Buffalo is in slightly better shape because they have the first rounder of the Islanders as well, but...
I guess the thing is, it's pretty cowardly of the NHL to implement this shit when the worst teams are the small markets of Edmonton and Buffalo. When Chicago and Pittsburgh and the NY Rangers sucked, oh god, you couldn't stack the deck in their favor enough.
Personally, it's to the NHL's *credit* that they are the last league with small markets. I make fun of the last round of expansion with Pinback as a running joke, but having teams in Columbus, Long Island, Calgary and Buffalo is COOL. Sports aren't just for people that live in the 32 largest American cities. How much has the NBA improved by getting teams into San Antonio and Oklahoma City? A lot, as far as I am concerned.
There is a hell of a consolation prize at the #2 draft spot, however. We'll get into the best prospects for the next draft in our next post.
