Ben, how is life in the new hous--

You know what would be nice? If you took your wife to see a movie tonight. That'd be nice.

Pinback has added chess notation to this thread.

Pinback, I hate it when I've seen a movie and you haven't. Please take your wife to see Gone Girl.

I wanted the Das actually, but it's not available here; it's already expensive, and coupled with international shipping costs would make the price rather prohibitive. So instead I got one that looks kinda similar and has the same key switches from the same manufacturer.

At the end of the day, all mechanical keyboards with Cherry MX switches are overpriced, but there's no good alternatives, really. (Which probably explains why they're overpriced.)

We saw Gone Girl tonight and really enjoyed it.

The direction was outstanding. I think 50% of the material is stuff that every modern couple goes through. Lord knows I am. The other 50% is crazy shit that would never happen outside of a movie.

Fincher elevated the material, in my opinion.

Time will tell on that one sir. Maybe wait for the first group of people viewing it to leave the theatre before you draw conclusions?

You can skip The Game and Panic Room, if those weren't part of the 5.
Based on the tale of the tape, how do the two latest films match up against one another?
Gone Girl is a long-ass atmospheric thriller, which Fincher has shown he can do well. Also, his last movie was sub-par, and if you've been following my analysis of Fincher's career, you know that EVERY OTHER MOVIE he makes is great. The pattern continues to this day. Just to review:

Alien3: BOOO
Se7en: YAAAY
The Game: BOOO
Fight Club: YAAAAAAAAAAAAY
Panic Room: BOOOO
Zodiac: YAAAAAY
Benjamin Button: BOOOOOOOOOOO
Social Network: YAAAAAY
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: BOOOOOO
Gone Girl: ?!?!?!?!?!?!

On the other side, it's less clear, as Inherent Vice is a complete departure for PTA:

1. For the first time, it's based directly on a book.
2. For the first time, it appears to be a Coen-esque detective story with comedic/stoner overtones.
3. For the first time, it's set in NON-present day Los Angeles.
4. For the second time, Philip Seymour Hoffman is not present. (And for the first time, was unavailable. :( )

So with all we know at this point, Fincher seems primed for a win.

However, never count Ol' Scruffy Beard out!

With the exception of Hard Eight and The Master, when every other movie PTA has made has come out, Fincher releases a film the same year. It's happening again this year!

Let's see how they've done HEAD-TO-HEAD:

1997:
PTA: Boogie Nights
Fincher: The Game
WINNER BY KO: PTA

1999:
PTA: Magnolia
Fincher: Fight Club
DRAW!

2002:
PTA: Punch-Drunk Love
Fincher: Panic Room
WINNER BY SPLIT DECISION: PTA

2007:
PTA: There Will Be Blood
Fincher: Zodiac
WINNER BY SPLIT DECISION: Fincher

2014:
PTA: Inherent Vice
Fincher: Gone Girl

FIGHT!
