Maybe because of the limited context I've experienced them, Japanese singers (Kiriko Takemura in Pinback's example or Ayumi Hamasaki) feel expressly limited, as if they are placed in a plastic box when off stage.
But I also feel expressly awkward as a 20 something, mildly overweight man watching heavily dolled up Japanese girls sing about candy...
