The key to high scores in Dig Dug is understanding how the scoring works. It sounds obvious now, but for example on level one I used to get 1,000-2,000 points, and now I get 6,000 points every time.
The first tip is that the lower in the dirt you are, the more points you get for killing creatures. From top to bottom it's 200, 300, 400, and 500 points. Additionally, if you pop Fygar from the side, you get double the points, making it 400, 600, 800, or 1,000 points. Just by knowing that alone, if you were to kill all four creatures on level one at the top of the playfield you would get 800 points. If you did it near the bottom, and got Fygar from the side, you would get 2,500.
In early levels, the key to maximizing points is dropping rocks on you enemies. Dropping a rock on one enemy gets you 1,000 points. It's 1,500 points more for the second and third creatures and 2,000 points more for every additional one, so three will net you 4,000 and four will get you 6,000. That's how I am able to get 6,000 points on level one. You'll have to spend some time coming up with a good pattern, but once you get one you'll be able to kill all four creatures on level one with a single rock.
The third tip is to get the bonus items, which appear after the second rock has dropped. These start with a carrot which is only worth 400 points, but the points quickly rise and soon they will be worth 1,000, 2,000, and more. There's a key strategic shift you'll have to make at some point when the bonus items become worth more than killing the enemies.
You also get 10 points for every square of dirt you dig. I'm sure this comes in to play if you are going for the world record but I haven't really factored that into my strategy as of yet.
Around level 9 the game speeds up significantly. All my strategy goes out the window at that point and it becomes purely survival mode.
