I am going to spoil everybody's day by resurrecting this thread and posting a chatlog in it. It concerns terrible music.

I am "Rock Tumbler" in this exchange.

Not at all. Shoegaze is a term for alternative rock featuring a lot of effects and feedback, creating a sort of "wall of sound" effect. Listen to early Flaming Lips (Hit to Death in the Future Head is a good place to start) for an example.

The name comes from the musicians' propensity for constantly looking down at their effect pedals.

Yeah, shoegazer music is another word for emo.

by Flack » Sun Dec 14, 2008 4:59 pm

My favorite genre name (I know nothing about the music itself) is "shoe gaze." I overheard someone saying it one day and thought they were saying something in Japanese, like "shugayz" or something.

Apparently "shoe gaze" describes a genre of music where the musicians are known for (ready?) performing while standing around and staring at their shoes. Back in high school we just called these people "shy."

by Maxell » Sun Dec 14, 2008 4:38 pm

That's Hip-Hop and not R&B, but I still think screamo is the awesomest name for a genre, bar none.

by hygraed » Sat Dec 13, 2008 3:58 pm

Yeah, the music video isn't the problem here. I like plenty of bands with goofy, low-budget videos (Cake and Pavement come immediately to mind), but the difference is that the song behind this particular video is absolutely atrocious. It's like they listened to a band like Gogol Bordello or Flogging Molly and thought "Hey, this genre-melding is really cool! We ought to try this!" and then went and melded two genres that do not go together in the least, namely R&B and screamo (which has its own problems, but whatever).

I like how ironic over-use of the autotune/vocoder vocal effect has become stylish.

So does the one guy from Rancid, it's a punk rock requirement.

by Flack » Sat Dec 13, 2008 7:15 am

Wow. That guy's response made me do something I never thought I would do in a million years. I watched the video a second time. As a second-time viewer, here is my retort.

- Sometimes, having a budget of $0.00 isn't really something to brag about. Spring for some nice clothes or something.

- These guys come off as poseurs. Big time. Why? First of all, assuming they didn't rent the cars in the video, between the two of them they have a Range Rover and a BMW. If they really "used their own equipment," that means they have some hella cameras, computers, software and know-how at their disposal. I'm just not buying the whole half-tattooed arm/half-bleached hair look. If you want to look like metal heads, somebody had better be holding a guitar -- and not one from Guitar Hero.

- I feel bad for mocking the "screaming guy" earlier, as, upon a second viewing, I think he may actually have a speech impediment. Even when he is in close proximity to a nice looking girl (which, you gotta think, only happens when he's filming a video) all he knows to do is choke her and scream. Smooth, slick.

- It's hard to take any band seriously with a three word hook when one of the words is "fucking" and another one is "freaky."

- Who gives a shit if alcohol was consumed on the set? The guy is drinking from a whiskey bottle, and again taking into consideration that their budget was 0.00, that means they had an empty whiskey bottle lying around. Plus, their song talks about drinking alcohol. That's like putting out a pro-heroin song with a video where a guy shoots up and then issuing a disclaimer that the needle was fake. That's so fucking lame. If I were involved in this dumb video I would take the opposite approach and tell everybody that I was drunk off my ass and didn't even remember working on it. Come to think of it, I'd blame the hair-dos on that as well.

- One of their names is "seven".

- The whole god damn thing is so ridiculous, it isn't until the whole thing's over that you go, "was that a guy in a pig costume?" How bad does your video have to be where a randomly dancing pig isn't the silliest thing in it?

by Flack » Sat Dec 13, 2008 4:38 am

I can empathize with the guy in the song who keeps screaming as though he were in pain from listening. I kind of made the same sounds while it was playing.

"Let's get freaky now ..."

YOOWWWWWWWWW.

By the post title, I assumed it was a song that Beaver did.

Man, how's that self-esteem working for ya?

it's a shame they have the wherewithal and talent to actually make a video of the song but cannot hear how bad the creation really is. It's like having a really nicely wrapped Christmas present containing dog crap. The kind of dog crap that turns white and dusty looking left on your front lawn bu some passing poodle.

By the post title, I assumed it was a song that Beaver did. So, seeing that it wasn't, I can enjoy it now.

Man, Autotune really was a bad idea. I was gonna use that as a band name for 2009. I guess I'll go with my backup plan, "Rovian Tactics."
