Well, cool. Time to log on to the ol' Kazaa.

You've probably already heard it, but just in case: be sure you hear Anti-Hu. Very nice song (not especially long, just a good song).

The cd's can be purchased somewhere online already, even though it's not yet June whatever. I'd gladly provide a handy link, but I'm very boozed up at the moment. My apologies, but hey, at least this response didn't take two months.

What do I know?

Well, it's the Offcell EP. It contains five songs:

Offcell
B
Microtonic Wave
Grey Machine
Victorious D

I've heard both B and Victorious D in concert over the years, and really only care for B. Offcell, Microtonic Wave and Grey Machine are all killer songs.

And if you thought their song June was long, Grey Machine clocks in at just over eleven minutes. Geez!

They're also supposed to have a full album release later this summer, although this album was slated for late last year, but I'll be patient.

Yeah, two tours ago, I saw 'em in Dallas and Zach broke a bass string and I think brought the show to a premature end. By that I mean, he seemed pissed/pissy, and they didn't do any encores or anything. It was just rather abrupt. But also, hardly anyone there seemed like they knew who Pinback was--they weren't very attentive to the music. It was a small crowd, in a coffehouse. Maybe Pinback's had some bad experiences in the South?
ChainGangGuy wrote:Oh, this might be a good time to ask, have you heard anything off of the new Offcell EP?
No, I haven't! According to Pinback's label's webpage (I just looked), it won't be out till June 10th! What do you know, ChainGangGuy???!!! What do you know!!!!????!!!!

Yes, I enjoy both of them, but I much prefer Pinback over all of Rob Crow's other musical projects.

Howzabout Neil Young? Like him?

Hey Looper, what about Heavy Vegetable or Optiganally Yours?

by looper » Tue Mar 04, 2003 12:05 am

Just finished a tape for a colleague. Labeled "Rainer Maria - Pinback/related bands". It is Rainer Maria's A Better Version of Me, minus one song that I don't like, plus Pinback and Pinback-related bands.

The whole Rainer Maria album is good (except for that one song), but some highlights are "Save My Skin", "Ceremony", "Atropine", and "The Contents of Lincoln's Pockets".

Pinback - Messenger
Pinback - Anti-Hu
Three Mile Pilot - On a Ship to Bangladesh
Thingy - Already Ivy
Thingy - Cut

Pinback is primarily two main dudes, and Three Mile Pilot is one dude's other band, and Thingy is the other dude's other band.

loafergirl-lady, because of your love for M. doughty and the fact that you corrected me with the proper citation for the BT song, I hereby dub thee "Chariss."

Awesome driving tune.

"We are here to save the erf! E! R! F!"

I dunno whatever happened to the rest of the band, but you could always ask Mike at www.superspecialquestions.com (his site)

You know, I do know that, but purposely neglected to include that nugget of info. I think because it would've taken up more than one line. And I didn't wanna seem like the big M. Doughty geek. So thank you for doing that for me. :)

Donde esta los digits du DJ Rap?

Chariss!

Also a good BT song, the one featuring Ms. Amos herself. "Blue Skies."

I shudder to ask, but are you an RMTA regular? On account of, that's where my gaming group tends to hang out online. And I usually end up stuffing envelopes for Little Blue World issues. And stuff.

Bruce
RMTA=WTF to me... so I guess that'd be a no...

Ah. Firewater reminds me that there's probably some appropriate Freakwater. Maybe "Gone to Stay" ?

To get briefly away from alt.country--John Lee Hooker's classic "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." Or the George Thorogood version if you prefer. Marah's "Catfisherman". The Dead Kennedys, "Too Drunk to Fuck."

I'm going to go see Steve Earle Saturday, and if I can talk Amy into it, Neko Case and the Freakwater Chicks Friday.

Bruce

Oh yeah.

Wow -- thanks to both of you for all the suggestions. A sampling of those I haven't heard is being downloaded now.

Bruce -- you've mentioned Eaglesmith before and I'm just now getting along to downloading it. "Little Buffalo" is excellent.

I'll probably put Earle's "Johnny Come Lately" on -- while it's not a drinking song, it is great to sing along to, even when you're completely lacking in talent.

Two more full albums I thought of late last night -- Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Five and Dimers Like Me" and Waylon Jennings' (Shaver-written) "Honky Tonk Heroes". I've broken furniture listening to "Honky Tonk Heroes" in the past.

gsdgsd wrote:Ok, so the (perhaps not overly healthy) CD I'm going to put together next -- good drinking songs.
Fuck. You are me.

We have the same CD collection, almost.

A couple you missed:

Fred Eaglesmith--lots of stuff, but most notably, "Little Buffalo":
I saw Big Bear Henry and Two Turtle Jim
Rollin' into town, they was ridin' on the rims
Sold their tires to buy themselves
A couple cases of beer.

But they got there a little too late
So they broke down the door and shot up the place
Now everybody's gone crazy round here.
I'd say, if you're going with Uncle Tupelo, there's a brilliant version of "Moonshiner" they did Live at the Mountain Stage. Also, of course, "Whiskey Bottle."

Bruce Springsteen, "Johnny 99".

John Prine, "Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You"

Just about anything else by the Pogues.

Tom Waits: lots and lots of the early stuff. "Tom Traubert's Blues" would probably be the best choice, although I could also go for "Heartattack and Vine."

The Dead, "Brown-Eyed Women".

If I were picking a single REK song, it'd have to be "Merry Christmas from the Family." Or maybe "Undone" if I were feeling kind of grim.

Two Nice Girls, "Birth Control and Beer".

Austin Lounge Lizards: "Old Blevins" or "Old, Fat, and Drunk." Or indeed, "When Drunks Go Bad." Or, well, damn near anything.

Steve Earle, "Copperhead Road".

Cowboy Junkies, "Oregon Hill"

The Hollisters, "Tyler"

That's just a few off the top of my head. I could go on all night.

Bruce
