Well, he got caught up. We all make mistakes!

None the less he was a great ball player, but wow, over Shannon Sharpe?

Hate to be a homer here, but what do these guys have against the Broncos. I guess I should not cry and steal the thunder here considering I am sure Saints fans feel the same way, but man there have been some questionable selections over the years.
(Well, Floyd Little made it in, so that's one Bronc in the Hall.) :)

But yeah. that's the problem with the Hall of Fame: it pits fan base against fan base with the fans of those teams trying to savage each other's best players. It's unfair, and I think up until literally the last couple of years, the people doing the electing had no idea what they were talking about.

I believe Rickey Jackson was the second greatest outside linebacker in NFL history. Shannon Sharpe, at the time he retired, was the greatest TE in NFL history. (I think Tony Gonzales will ultimately be #1 there.) What's ridiculous is not that Jackson made it in before Sharpe, but that the following players made it in before either world-class, deserving player:

- Harry Carson, LB, Giants
- Andre Tippett, LB, Patriots
- Ralph Wilson, owner, Bills
- Bob Hayes, WR, Dallas

I assume Hayes was a veteran's committee decision, but fuck, the guy had over 1,000 yards receiving twice in his career. Okay, they played 14 games back then: he averaged 56.2 yards per game. That is not 1,000 a season in the modern-day 16-game NFL. I know the passing game wasn't as prolific back then, but fuck Christ, that guy can wait his turn after Sharpe.

I don't have any problem with Carson and Tippett getting in. I don't know exactly when Sharpe retired, but come on: you put Sharpe in ahead of both of them.

So yeah, it sucks. Ralph Wilson KILLED the Bills in the 70s. Growing up, all I heard from my dad is that he was murdering that team. I think some things are unforgivable. I mean, great, he hired Bill Polian who took the Bills to the SB four times. Why isn't Polian still there? He was able to get the Colts there twice.

I mean, Christ, Tom Benson now has an NFL Championship. That's more than Wilson has - should Benson be in the Hall of Fame? No. Some things are unforgivable, and Benson insinuating that he might move the team to Albuquerque is one of them.

So yeah, it sucks. I'll be shocked if Sharpe isn't elected next year.

This morning the talk on the radio was the only reason this happened was because the Saints were in the Super Bowl. Again, sometimes the voting for these halls filled with heads, seems a little ridiculous.
Haha, I had heard some of the callers afterwards, and a good percentage of them had never heard of Rickey Jackson or Russ Grimm, but were more than willing to state how they didn't belong.

The thing that got me was that Russ Grimm was the best player on the offensive line of the Redskins team that beat the Broncos 42-10 in the Super Bowl, when a no-name running back named Timmy Smith had like, what, 230 yards rushing? You'd think that a Denver talk radio caller would appreciate the excellence there!

Anyway, Atwater's coming up as well, right? I hope he makes it, too.

We flipped [a coin] again, and I won, so I drove out to the university again. After listening to music for a few minutes, I changed stations and found a news station.

Code: Select all

"...as soon as it hits, with instant updates as they occur, all the news, all the time. Philip Martin is at the editors' desk, I'm Diana Martin. News Radio 12 time is 4:35 PM, Eastern Standard Time.
"San Francisco: National Guard and Forest Service personnel as well as hundreds of firefighters are battling a 15,000 acre fire in the San Joachin Valley which has been exacerbated by drought conditions. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated, and reports are that 12 people so far have died due to smoke inhalation and burn injuries.
"Los Angeles: Red Cross officials are attempting to assist victims who have been left homeless as a result of days of rain, devastating floods and mudslides, this coming only weeks after a major earthquake struck Southern California. Property damage alone is expected to top $1 billion. Police report 14 people are either dead or unaccounted for.
"Cincinnati: Famed Rock Star Dick Spitz was found in a hotel room this morning, dead from an apparent overdose of PCP, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines and moonshine. Spitz, 28, was most famous for his song, ‘It's Now the Time,' which went platinum in four weeks, and sold over 7 million copies. The song was number 3 on the charts before it was declared obscene by the U.S. Supreme Court two years ago. He is reported to be survived by ten children from four different women. Spitz was never married."

Now what....

So does this mean he will father 20 more children :) in celebration?

I forgive him I guess since he did play the born again card. Does the church help him pay all that child support?

I guess I will fall in line and forgive him.

None the less he was a great ball player, but wow, over Shannon Sharpe?

He does deserve it none the less.

Amen - I guess :)

Rickey Jackson: Fallen hero, Born Again Christian

08:11 AM CDT on Saturday, May 21, 2005

WWLTV.com

The only flaw that Rickey Jackson had on a football field was that he wasn’t twins. Off the field, was a different story. The man so admired for his effort, strength and perserverance on the field, was an admittedly weak man off of it.

He destructed from a devastating combination of fame, money, opportunity, idolatry, and adultery.

WWL-TV

Rickey Jackson talked to Eyewitness Sports' Jim Henderson about his fast former life, his regrets and his new, "Born Again" status.

His sins were broad and deep.

He admits that he had his pick of pretty girls while clubbing, and pick he did.

“I did things that I know were wrong,” he said.

He has ten children – by seven different women. Three from a wife, two from a high school girlfriend and five more from five different women.

He’s gone through a pair of marriages, but compared to his father, he’s only in the minor leagues.

APPLE DOESN’T FALL FAR

Rickey Jackson said his father was a “roller.” A “roller” being someone who lives a fast lifestyle of fame, money and women – going from woman to woman, only worrying about self gratification.

“He had 24 kids,” said Jackson. “I have 23 brothers and sisters.”

One of Jackson’s brothers was born just days before him, by a woman who was not his mother, in the same hospital where he would be born just days later.

“Me and him were born a couple of days apart. We look just alike,” said Jackson. “I should have learned from him (my father).”

Apparently Jackson learned better than he thought.

“I was a foolish roller,” he admits today.

FROM FOOLISH ROLLER TO HOLY ROLLER

But Jackson claims that his lesson came late. Now, he claims he is a born-again Christian.

His passions, he says, are now golf and the Lord.

He said he combines them both on Mondays, playing with his church’s bishops and studying the Bible with them afterward.

He owned a club in West Palm Beach – Club 57. Every temptation was at his fingertips then, until, he said, he found the Lord.

“I was sitting in the back of my club with my bodyguards to make sure no one messed with me and God just told me that if I don’t do this, ‘I’m not going to keep you around.’”

Jackson said shortly thereafter he gave up the club, the lifestyle and found in the Lord the only one that he was more anxious to please than himself.

“God delivered me from everything I asked him to deliver me from. I don’t run girls anymore. He washed a lot from my blood. I don’t gamble, don’t smoke, don’t drink.”

LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK

Jackson’s mother forbade him from contact with his biological father. Her death and his rebirth allowed him to forgive…if not forget.

“I hadn’t had dinner with him in my 47 years and I got saved and now we go to church together.”

Rickey acknowledges that there are too many single parent kids, and he realizes his contribution to the problem. But, he now says he relishes the chance to guide the sons of fathers who have also strayed.

“If you don’t have your daddy, you got me,” he said. “If you have an issue or problem, you’re going to see Rickey Jackson.”

PROBLEMS NOT ALL IN REAR VIEW MIRROR

But Jackson’s problems may not all be behind him. He admits to having one unresolved child support case and one local woman, having seen Eyewitness Sports promote the story with Jackson, called to say that he was considerably behind in his child support payments for their son.

Records from local courts and the State of Louisiana show Jackson does owe more than $130,000 to the woman and their son.
