Galactica was in theaters, yeah. It was the two-hour TV movie/premiere/whatever. Basically John Dykstra (the special effects guy) had been fired by George Lucas from Star Wars and got hired with his gear and crew by TV-crap-shoveler Glen A. Larson to do BG. Then once the series was in production and they had a two-hour movie, Universal (who was paying for it) figured hey, let's milk this a bit at the picture-shows.
Same thing may have been the case with the Buck Rogers movie, I dunno. But if you saw Buck Rogers in the theater, even if you were, like, 10 or whatever I was, you remember well the nonsensical opening credits with bikini-clad chicks lounging all over the main titles.
