Smile (2022)

by Flack » Thu Nov 17, 2022 8:47 am

Moments before she dies, a patient of Dr. Rose Cotter claims "something that only she can see" is trying to kill her. Dr. Cotter is overworked and overstressed, and this incident pushes her to her breaking point.

Smile draws a lot of inspiration from The Ring; in both films, once a person has seen a specific event they are doomed to die, and both films follow someone who has inadvertently found themselves cursed and fighting against a ticking clock to escape their own impending death. Unlike The Ring in which anyone can view "the tape," in Smile the victims seem to have a connection -- unravelling that connection may just save Rose's life.

There's interesting subtext in Smile; how the victims, and literally everyone who suffers in this movie, wears a smile. As Rose both faces the current threat and deals with tragedy from her past, she -- and all the victims she encounters -- are smiling. It's not the deepest social commentary ever, but it's something. And kind of profound.

Smile delivers on multiple levels -- it's creepy, it's scary, and it's horrifying. This is 2022, so don't expect everything to be explained or wrapped up with a nice bow. Take it for what it is, hold on to your seat, and for god's sake, SMILE.

Smile is currently streaming on Paramount+
