Getting the band back together
One of the things I want to do is make another album. The other three guys in my band are in. I just need to write and record the songs.
I had a Roland EM-10 keyboard. I brought it out of storage, ordered a MIDI to USB cable, found the MIDI to USB cable I already owned, picked up the new MIDI to USB cable, found the power supply and plugged it in.
One of the keys died. I guess that is to be expected since I last played it 15 years ago. Oh boy.
So I dunno, I might be in the market for a new one. I paid $400 for the EM-10 in 1999 or 2000. It retailed for $300. I ordered it in a regular store in Fort Collins and the owner of the place charged what he thought he could get. It was one of the seminal experiences in my life when it came to trusting the Internet more than any brick and mortar store. At $400, I definitely wanted to get the one key that didn't work any longer fixed. I checked to see what they go for on eBay.
$85.
So I may just be getting another one. I am interested in modern synthesizers (which the EM-10 definitely is not - it is something to get the music into the computer as far as I am concerned) but I also think that I should make one song before spending crazy money on this hobby.
(The Reddit FAQ for musical keyboards is a riot. They suggest $500 as a minimum to get started and state you are only "serious" if you spend near $2000 on one. I really hate Redditors and sometimes I wonder if it's deserved. Then you see posts like that and you're like yes. Yes it is. What a bunch of fucking melvins.)

One of the coolest things I downloaded was the Korg legacy pack. It emulates a slew of keyboards that would be expensive to really own. You can use your Roland to play them and record straight into whatever DAW you want.

Re: Getting the band back together
You have all inspired me to put some of our stuff on bandcamp. Amazingly, the domain for Beaver was still available. Only one track up, it SHOULD allow unlimited plays. Obviously disclaimer that this was made with early 90s technology on Tascam cassette recorders, we lived in 4 different states and I didn't get a chance to be a perfectionist.

I did not know about this bandcamp thing. Ever since Tindeck died there has been no place for me to put music stuff.

De nada, Varkus.
I put three other songs up. Time to write some new ones.

Re: Getting the band back together
This is a song that has some parts to it, keyboard, bass, piano and drums. There are some errors that I need to correct in MIDI form. If any of you give it a listen, I'm very open to feedback as to what sounds like ass, what doesn't work, etc. I want to hear what the bass guitar sample sounds like in my car before I make any permanent decisions. And the bass drum and crash cymbal need to be added. I think our vocalist / percussionist might play a cowbell live when that day happens.
It's called Carnival Baby.

That breakdown 2/3 the way through the song threw me off! MIDI has come a long way.

Re: Getting the band back together
I'm really surprised; I liked it. The only problem I had with it was the notes at the beginning -- say seconds 0:13 - 0:19 -- didn't sound like a "real" instrument but by something generated; the best I can define it is "organ processed by autotune" but that's not right. I think if it was done with a "real" instrument it would really be good.

Damn, I missed a tie-in joke by not saying "It was a nice tune but it wasn't like you were on a mission from God."
