I'm back on the Night Owl. I'm really gonna try to keep it up. Everyone probably already gave up on it, which is okay, since I was the only one ever on the original Night Owl too.

So after a year of runing telnet BBSes that even the sysops don't call or post on, what did we learn from all of this?

Like the use of slide rules - I taught myself how to read a slide rule probably 30 years ago - it was a good, important idea at the time that technology first deprecated, then obsoleted.

Let us look with fondness as the single-user BBS goes the way of the buggy whip maker and the blacksmith, the manual telephone operator, and the 640K limit for PC applications, which even the richest man in the world said was good enough for most people.

Even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day.

Good job, Commander.

Flack wrote:Like a lot of projects (and specifically retro ones) the idea was more fun than the reality. The idea of setting up a BBS (even a telnet one) sounds really fun and exciting but the reality is, it's limited and archaic. The message areas aren't as good as web-based forums, the file areas aren't as good as any other modern method of exchanging files (take your pick), the private messaging features aren't as good as e-mail and the real time chat features aren't as good as IRC. The idea of an off the grid" hangout pretty much went out the window with the discovery that the NSA is pretty much slurping all web traffic at this point. Based on that, a telnet BBS is really no more secure or private than a private message on a forum.

It was fun to set it up. I enjoyed going through all the configuration, setting up all the ANSI files, and so on. That being said, if it ever dies, I wouldn't set it back up.
I gave it another year. I think I'll be shutting down this iteration of The Gas Chamber at the end of the year.

So you're saying we have 10 days to make a go of it?!?

Ten days to make Gas Chamber BBS live!

I can't even imagine what nonsense is going on at mine. Lord of the Flies shit over there, I'll bet.

Mostly just flies. No new posts on yours, one new post on Ben's. No new posts on mine. I feel like we have duplicated efforts by creating three different things that not even the people who own and run them can muster up enough interest to post on. I feel like two will probably cover it.

Okay, I understand why you did it, but now I have to get Ben to destroy his now. I am sorry. I have to.

I am shipping off the original dial-up BBS to Jethro Q. Walrustitty. Maybe he can get the DOS BBS working in telnet. If so you might enjoy that.

Cool! I'd love to see those threads again and how young we all sounded.

I can do a part two since obviously we have a whole new crew now except for you, Aardvark and Bugs.

That would be excellent, yes.

By the way, that was posted in December of 2014. So, did you decide to kill The Gas Chamber or have you granted it a Stay of Execution? :)

Perhaps this was a cruel statement. Too cruel, maybe.
