POKER QUIZ #2!

Post by pinback »

At a ten-seat Texas Hold 'Em table, what is the maximum number of players that could have a royal flush (A-K-Q-J-10 suited)? (EDIT: During the same hand, obviously.)

I voted quickly, throwing math to the wind this time.

I did this without looking at anyone's answer. In any game of Texas Hold'em, the number of players is irrelevant, the maximum number of players who can get a royal flush (or any flush) is, at most, one.

A royal flush is the cards 10-J-Q-K and A, all in the same suite. As a player has only two cards, they must have three of these from the river. Since the river is only five cards, at most one person can get a royal flush.

However, Texas-hold-em allows something you can't get in any other poker game: the possibility of something even rarer: a six- or seven-way royal flush, a six-way or seven-way flush (six- or seven-in-a-row but not including all of Q-K-A). While these are extremely rare, they could happen.

Also, the maximum number of possible players in a game of Texas-Hold-Em could conceivably be 23, and the dealer would be left with one card.

All of this presumes a standard 52-card deck with the Joker discarded. It would be interesting to have a game with Joker as either wild or the equivalent of either the "0" card (below Ace) "10 1/2" (between 10 and Jack) or above King/above Ace.

It's not time to reveal the answer yet, but I think it's important to note that Paul's post contained five short paragraphs, and every single one included an error.

Oh, let's just get it over with. The correct answer was 10. Who picked 10? You win.

You did it... poorly:
In any game of Texas Hold'em, the number of players is irrelevant, the maximum number of players who can get a royal flush (or any flush) is, at most, one.
Incorrect. The maximum number of players who can get a royal flush (or any flush) is all of them.
A royal flush is the cards 10-J-Q-K and A, all in the same suite.
"Suit".
As a player has only two cards, they must have three of these from the river. Since the river is only five cards, at most one person can get a royal flush.
The "river" is the fifth card dealt to the "board". The "board" is the set of five cards in the middle of the table that you are referring to. Not the "river".
However, Texas-hold-em allows something you can't get in any other poker game: the possibility of something even rarer: a six- or seven-way royal flush
Absolutely incorrect. There is no such thing as a "six- or seven-way flush." There are only five-card flushes. A "six-way flush" does not beat a higher-ranked five-card flush, because there is no such thing as a "six-way flush."
Also, the maximum number of possible players in a game of Texas-Hold-Em could conceivably be 23, and the dealer would be left with one card.
22. Three cards are "burnt" (removed) during the play of the hand.
All of this presumes a standard 52-card deck with the Joker discarded.
There are two Jokers in a standard 52-card deck.

Every single sentence was wrong.

I picked 2, which I immediately realized was wrong, and wanted to change it to 1. I didn't think about a royal flush being dealt on the table. Has that ever happened?

Paul, with all your free time, I would like you to create a text-based poker simulator based on the rules as you understand them.

The one poll where you do not have a "I do not" option!

I have zero idea how to play this game at all. All I know is 5 card draw.

I picked ten!! The reason is because every casino I go to, these "card" games have multiple decks!!

Well, that was the right answer, for the wrong reason. But you still win. Nice job.

Mmm I think it was the right reason! Maybe you don't go to the same "professional" casinos in Las Vegas that I do!
