Now I see why my Internet quits at inopportune moments

Post by Tdarcos » Wed Aug 21, 2019 7:00 pm

I just installed some apps on my tablet including one that gives me root access. These apps were
* Kongo root
* IP Tools
* Qute (terminal emulator)
* Terminal Emulator (not as pretty as Qute but slightly faster)
* Web Tools (includes FTP, SSH, and Telnet)

IP Tools allowed me to discover that the DHCP lease this place issues when you connect is only 600 minutes (10 hours), Now, what I think happens is that when you first connect to the network and it sends you to the "click to accept the terms and conditions" page, that's when it really assigns you a usable DHCP lease, or in some fashion allows you to connect, not just to their splash page, but actually connect to their Internet.

Now, if you don't know how DHCP works, your router assigns you an IP address, in the private network (10.x.x.x (large organizations), 172.16.x.x - 172.31.x.x (this is the range the Cisco router here uses), or 192.168.x.x (this is the range a consumer router uses, usually in the 192.168.0.x - 192.168.2.x range)), and grants you a temporary "lease," assigning it to your device until the lease expires or your device explicitly releases the lease. (Shutting down your computer or device typically does not release the lease.) Well, when the lease reaches the halfway point, which would be five hours in my case, the DHCP client will request a renewal of the lease.

If for some reason the issuer does not respond it will try again in 1/2 of the remaining time, or an hour and a half. Well, lets say the request was successful. The authentication system will expect the user to approve terms and conditions again, and access to the Internet is blocked until they do.

This seems to explain why I have internet disconnections on a too-often basis, I have to keep re-authenticating every five hours. Or every ten.

The LAN in the Hotel California has the same DHCP behavior. You would think they wouldn’t renew so often..

Welcome to the Hotel California. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!

I don't get it. Why can't you leave after you check out?

To "check out" is a '70s expression meaning "to die." I would has figured you'd know that. Don Henley's using it in the eponymous song as a double-meaning pun, both as in to check out from a hotel and to die.

Didn't he use that as a nod to Jackson Browne's first wife?

Now I'm even more confused. Don Henley?

Yeah, but not as many people as were/are members of Jefferson Airplane / Jefferson Starship / Starship; Fleetwood Mac; or Chicago.
