Another year-end comp?

Post by Bainespal »

I know it's early for this, but I've been thinking ahead. Is anyone interested in doing another end-of-the-year Hugo comp?

I think there's something I might try to write as another Hugo micro-IF at some point. If we're going to do another comp, I'll make tentative plans to write it for that, assuming that I develop the idea in the meantime into something suitable for a very short IF piece.

I just uploaded an expanded version of "Waiting for The End" to the IF Archive. I plan to update "World Builder" too.

For a little while, I was thinking of moving it up to September, as long as I could check in with everybody and make sure that nobody planned to write an IF Comp game. The last couple weeks have been pretty busy for me, though, and I haven't had the feeling there was enough available people to make it worthwhile, so yes, the Hugo Comp is moved back to the end of the year.

Just the same, the tentative theme for this year is a porting theme, inspired by my re-coding of the Hugo "SceptreQuest" game. Like "SceptreQuest," people are free to embellish games they choose to port (assuming they have permission or the game is properly lost and forgotten) or do a faithful port, if they prefer. I figure this way people can still have some fun without the pressure.

Still, if you'd prefer to do something original, there will probably be optional themes, too. One of the possibilities is to do another ArcadeComp, where people write IF scenarios based on arcade games.

Will have to check out the new "Waiting for the End"!

Maybe I'll try to do a "port" or adaptation of a DOS platformer or scrolling arcade shooter. Those are the games that are nostalgic to me.
