telnet to bbs.robohara.com (default port, 23).

telnet to moltobenny.com port 23

Those are the two we have so far. My Infocom server is NOT ready. Also, the BBS project I am working on that will not compete with those two fine places is also not ready.

You can play Zork 2 at Ben's site as well: http://zork2.moltobenny.com/

I added a ultra-secret warez BBS on denofiniquity.caltrops.com. Telnet port 23 as the others.

You can post and read a few Usenet bases with it. Post whatever you want - Usenet is dead and we would only serve to prop it up.

So how did this work out? Poorly.

I fell off of Flack's for the same reason Pinback probably didn't touch yours: it takes too much time for too little benefit. Christ, the community here is probably two or three times bigger than that on any BBS as of 2013 (sadly), so why post?

Yeah, but look, you have the time. You have allllllllll the time.

But I have putty on all computers I access, so, welp.

Like a lot of projects (and specifically retro ones) the idea was more fun than the reality. The idea of setting up a BBS (even a telnet one) sounds really fun and exciting but the reality is, it's limited and archaic. The message areas aren't as good as web-based forums, the file areas aren't as good as any other modern method of exchanging files (take your pick), the private messaging features aren't as good as e-mail and the real time chat features aren't as good as IRC. The idea of an off the grid" hangout pretty much went out the window with the discovery that the NSA is pretty much slurping all web traffic at this point. Based on that, a telnet BBS is really no more secure or private than a private message on a forum.

It was fun to set it up. I enjoyed going through all the configuration, setting up all the ANSI files, and so on. That being said, if it ever dies, I wouldn't set it back up.

I was pretty pissed at how I couldn't remember how to set sbbs back up when I had to reboot my Linode.

Apparently, I need to become root, which is - god.

And then do a ./sbbs -d in the right directory.

Nnngh.

Flack, I am sorry that you wouldn't set yours back up if something happened to it. I do like it. It's just that a BBS is not that great if nobody is going to it. I haven't had a visitor on mine since July.

The last 5-10 users that registered for my BBS never "called" back. I think people enjoy the idea of a telnet BBS and they like filling out a new user account and poking around and then they log off and return to their world of Twitter and Facebook and e-mail and whatnot.

Pinback hasn't been on his OWN since July.

Look, I am guaranteeing a new message topic once a week for the next month. telnet to denofiniquity.caltrops.com someone!

I log on to them all multiple times a week. Except for ICJ's, which I was not a member of. But I am now. So I will log on to it multiple times a week.

It is time that I also logged on and wrote terrible things multiple times a week.

Oh, let's see if my post to Usenet showed up on the Amiga group.

...

God DAMMIT. It's getting them but not sending them. Wait, don't leave! I'll get it working!

I switched Usenet companies and had to request the ability to post, which I have done! Please allow 15 minutes!

It has been at least a month since I have logged onto them.

I validated your account -- you should be able to log on and look around now.

Also, I posted the latest version of telnet for Windows here. This version properly renders the ANSI graphics.

Great to know that these are getting used! If you have any trouble with mine, Garth, just let me know.

I have come to peace with the fact that I will probably logon just a couple times a week to catch up because of how fast-moving life is, but I looooooove knowing they are out there.

Has Pinback even called his BBS this year? It's May, champ. MAY.

ITT, I call Pinback "champ."
