81. Green Day - Brain Stew

I wasn't a particularly early Green Day fan -- I discovered them with Dookie like the rest of America. It's funny how "punk" those early tracks used to sound and how "normal" they sound today.

I'm a sucker for a good staccato guitar riff with a tight gate, and this one certainly qualifies. I'm on my own, here we go. When this song comes on, the volume goes to 11.

80. Cake - War Pigs

I have this weird memory of learning about Cake and Fun Luvin' Criminals and Beck and Dog Fashion Disco all during the same summer. Maybe it wasn't but for some reason all of those bands are grouped together in my brain.

I'm sure I learned about Cake from their single "The Distance," but I didn't fall in love with the band until I picked up their "B-Sides and Rarities" album.

Along with cover versions of "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", "Mahna, Mahna", and "Strangers in the Night", we get this creative cover of the classic Black Sabbath track, complete with a funky bass line and a horn section. It's a crazy, kooky version of the song, and it makes me smile every time my phone dishes it up.

79. Godsmack - Whatever

I like this song. I also like the fact that it was recorded on Pro-Tools in an abandoned warehouse for almost no money.

78. Nine Inch Nails - Sin

One of the first CD singles I ever bought. I stayed up late one night at a party talking about NIN to a girl. We had waffles later. She had been snorting coke and never spoke to me again.

77. B-52s - Dance This Mess Around

My old boss at Mazzio’s Pizza used to walk around screaming “ROCK LOBSTER!” None of us knew what he was talking about.

76. Veruca Salt - Seether

Great band, great song. “Volcano Girls” is also great. I was really bummed when they broke up.

75. Sinead O’Connor

It’s too bad she went a little nutso because this is one of the greatest debut albums of all time.

74. Beck - Soul Suckin’ Jerk

I got a job makin money for the man
Throwin' chicken in the bucket with the soda pop can
Puke green uniform on my back
I had to set it on fire in a vat of chicken fat

I leaped on the counter like a bird with no hair
Runnin' through the mini-mall in my underwear
I got lost downtown, couldn't find a ride home
Sun went down, I got frozen to the bone

'til a hooker let me share her fake fur coat
As I took a little nap the cops picked up us both
I tried to explain I was only tryin' to get warm
I knew I never ever should have burnt my uniform

He said, "too bad better bite the bullet hard son."
I didn't have no teeth so I stole his gun
And I crawled out the window with my shadow on a spoon
Dancin' on the roof, shootin' holes in the moon

I ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
I'm gonna take it all back and I ain't sayin jack

73. The Cars - Let’s Go

To be young and spontaneous again. I love the night life, baby.

72. King’s X - Over My Head

The closest any song has come to explaining how important music is to me.

71. Lenny Kravitz - Always on the Run

I love tight guitars, and sloppy guitars. This is the latter. Slash makes, but doesn’t steal, this song.

70. Living Colour - Cult of Personality

Lots of songs convinced me to pick up the guitar. This one convinced me to put it down. I’ll never be this good.

69. Jane’s Addiction - Mountain Song

My 11th grade sociology teacher was so worried that my friends and I were devil worshippers that he made us watch a special on the harmful effects of rock music. I didn’t know about Jane’s Addiction before that day but they were in the video and that night I went out and bought Nothing’s Shocking. Sorry, Coach Preston!

68. Orgy - Blue Monday

I respect New Order as much as the next guy, but this version of Blue Monday rocks.

67. Stone Temple Pilots - Where the River Goes

I can, and have, listened to the first STP album back-to-back on repeat. I almost listed “Crackerman” but then I realized I had no idea what that song was about. Come to think of it, I don’t know what any of these songs are about. I saw STP open for the Flaming Lips and the Butthole Surfers. That was a trippy evening.

66. Public Enemy - By the Time I Get to Arizona

Arizona might want to think twice about not making MLK day a holiday.

65. Love and Rockets - It Could Be Sunshine

From the ashes of Bauhaus comes Love and Rockets. My love for you won’t last for one day. I love how this song kicks in a minute into it.

64. Helmet - Unsung

Another song that gets cranked to 11 any time it comes on.

63. Sepultura - Refuse/Resist

I heard Sepultura early on and wrote them off as generic death metal. By the time Chaos A.D. came around, I was back on the bandwagon. I saw them on the Roots tour performing with Type O Negative and Ozzy. I am so glad I saw them live before they split up.

62. Ice-T - Colors

When this song came out a friend of mine and I would cruise around the bad side of town with this song blasting. We were decked out inRaiders gear and armed with Dr. Pepper and Twizzlers. I’m so glad we never got a flat tire.

* BONUS *

Here’s Ice-T’s “Reckless” from the Breakin’ soundtrack. This is the first Ice-T song I ever heard. I can recite both of these songs, word for word, on request. Just ask. Please.

61. Black Sabbath - Sweet Leaf

Ugly Kid Joe, Godsmack, Six Feet Under, and every stoner rock band have all covered this song. The original is still the best, imho.

60. System of a Down - Violent Pornography

Google this song and Nabisco and you will find some interesting connections. If I were listing albums, I’d group Mezmerize and Hypnotize together as one (they both fit together on a single 74 minute CD) and it would be in my top 10. Maybe top 5.

59. Soundgarden - Rusty Cage

Bought the album for “Outshined,” fell in love with “Rusty Cage.” The album before this one is terrific, too. By the time they got to “Spoonman,” they lost me.

58. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time

When Cyndi cries, we all cry.

57. Crowbar - All I Had I Gave

Long before Down and all the other projects was Crowbar. This song is so bad ass. This was the first song played at my wedding. Just kidding. I wish, though.

56. Staind - Mudshovel

A friend of mine played this song for me and I was like, “OH MY GOD, THIS IS THE MOST AWESOME BAND EVER!” Then Fred Durst got a hold of them and we got “It’s Been a While” and… sad trombone. Great chorus, though.

55. Stevie Wonder - Superstition

If this song comes on in my car and you don’t start dancing I will make you get out, even if we are on the highway.

54. Rob Zombie - Devil Man

I could have swapped just about any White Zombie or Rob Zombie song from his first two albums into this slot. Superbeast, Black Sunshine, Planet Motherfucker… all good tracks. Let’s face it, it’s just a lot of mumbling and “YEAH!” over and over. I saw White Zombie a few times, once with Danzig, and they were always good live.

YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!

53. Faith no More - Take This Bottle

I have every album and know every song. I’ve seen them live a few times, mostly in small clubs before they really blew up. Started with The Real Thing, worked my way back, hung in there for Angeldust, and really, really got on board with King for a Day and Album of the Year. The new one’s great, too.

52. Muppets - I Hope That Somethin’ Better Comes Along

“Uh, tadpoles don’t have feet… TWO THREE FOUR!”

Other classics: Movin’ Right Along, Can You Picture That, and the Riverbottom Nightmare Band.

* BONUS *

The heaviest Muppet song of all time, the Riverbottom Nightmare Band.

51. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

Great song with a great story. Runners up include: Wasted Years, Can I Play with Madnes, and Run to the Hills. And every other Iron Maiden song.

50. Souls at Zero - Souls at Zero

Formerly Wrathchild America, who appears later on the list. Some say the body dies, but not the soul, it will rise. There are a few other great tracks on this album.

49. Red Hot Chili Peppers - I Could Have Lied

Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic was the band’s crowning achievement. There were a few good songs before (“Blackeyed Blonde,” “Higher Ground”) and a few after, but if I had to pick one song and one album, this is my pick.

48. Don Henley - The Boys of Summer

I lost her to a new guy, and would have taken her back if he had left her. She kept the guy. I got the song.

47. Jay-Z - 99 Problems

The official video has been removed (again) from YouTube. This is Jay-Z at his best, with Rick Rubin unleashed.

http://vimeo.com/110496766

46. Bjork - Army of Me

A great drum loop, a great chorus, and a great video. No, Harambe!

45. Run D.M.C. - Raising Hell

Kings from Queens, from Queens come Kings, we’re raisin’ hell like the class when the lunchbell rings. A friend of mine dubbed his record onto a cassette for me and the rest was history. I’m wearing white Adidas right now because of this album. Got black, got white, white with black stripe, the ones I like to wear when I rock THE MIC.

44. Pearl Jam - Black/Porch/rearviewmirror

Take your pick.

43. AC/DC - Back in Black

Depending on the day, this could have just as easily have been “Hells Bells,” “Highway to Hell,” “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Polution,” “or “For Those About to Rock.”

We salute you.

42. Beastie Boys - So Whatcha Want

Honorable mentions: “Three MCs and One DJ,” “Fuck You,” and a dozen others. This one wins for being as cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce. RIP MCA.

41. Metallica - The Small Hours

There are great songs on each of Metallica’s first four albums (five including Garage Days). I could make some pretty strong arguments for a lot of them, but this is one I never ever get tired of. I know technically it’s a cover, but there’s not a person on the planet who had heard the original first (most people still haven’t).

40. N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton

I hadn’t heard of Compton, California before I heard this album. I was afraid to go there afterwards. What an amazing breakthrough album.

39. Nirvana - Sliver

I read “Siddhartha” for a school book report. A few weeks later I ran into a guy wearing a Nirvana shirt at a local arcade. This was about a year before Nevermind came out. Who knew?

38. Whitesnake - Still of the Night

I spent a lot of time playing air guitar on a pool cue to this song at the local bowling alley. And also touching myself inappropriately to this video. Not at the bowling alley, though.

37. Prince - Purple Rain

Lots of Prince songs make me smile. A few make me cry. Still amazing, 30+ years later.

36. Danzig - Soul on Fire

“Long Way Back from Hell,” “Her Black Wings,” “Tired of Being Alive,” “I’m the One”... I forgot which one I was listening to when I pledged my soul to almighty Satan, but it was probably this one.

35. Madness - It Must Be Love

Madness had some great songs (“Our House”, “One Step Beyond”) and some really stupid videos.

34. Type-O-Negative - Summer Breeze

Type-O-Negative holds the record for the band I’ve unintentionally seen live the most times — 4, I think. I saw them with Sepultura, I saw them with Danzig, I saw them with White Zombie… I may have seen them at Burger King once. This is one of the greatest cover tunes of all time. RIP, Pete.

33. The Smithereens - The World We Know

I listened to this song so many times on repeat once that my girlfriend said she would leave me if I didn’t stop. I sure wish I could remember her name...

32. Fear Factory - Demanufacture

The band that introduced me to industrial metal, drum triggers, and really revitalized my interest in metal.

31. Slipknot - The Heretic Anthem

Loved all the singles from the band’s third album (“Before I Forget,” “Duality,” “Psychosocial”) and I am too old to be enjoying this band. This track has one of the nastiest guitar sounds I”ve ever heard on a major label album.

30. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Lookin’ out my Back Door

This was a tough call between this one, “Long As I Can See the Light,” and “Down on the Corner.” This song is the ring tone for my dad on my phone. “Suzie Q” really was the first song played at our wedding reception.

29. The Romantics - Talking in your Sleep

28. Wrathchild America - Climbin’ the Walls

I saw this band perform live several times. They only put out two albums before reinventing themselves and changng their name to Souls at Zero. I have a set list from one of their shows that I ripped off the stage. I hope you listen to this one all the way through.

* BONUS *

Here’s their cover version of Pink Floyd’s “Time.”

27. White Trash - Apple Pie

I think this is a band ICJ would like and Pinback would hate almost as much as he hates this list. I took a date to see this band live in a club once. I was singing along so loudly that I ended up on stage and sang the chorus of this song. Then I shouted “HERE WE GO!” and dove off the stage and landed on my date. Nearly killed her. April was the season, but it also was her name.

26. Floater - The Sad Ballad of Danny Boy

This song is so, so good. Stay for the chorus!

25. Motley Crue - Live Wire

Something about the audio doesn’t sound 100% right to me, but you’ll get the idea. I saw Motley Crue live twice, once on Dr. Feelgood with Warrant and once during their farewell tour with Alice Cooper. If I’d had my way, I would have named one of our kids Motley and the other one Crue.

24. Marilyn Manson - Lunchbox

Not just a great Manson song, a great metal anthem. “I wanna grow up, wanna be, a big rock and roll star. I wanna grow up, I wanna be, so no one fucks with me.”

Next motherfucker’s gonna get my metal.

23. Pantera - I’m Broken

Somehow I picked this one over every other great Pantera song. I saw Pantera live a bunch of times, too — three or four times when they were playing clubs and driving between Dallas and OKC, once with Alice in Chains, once with Skid Row… they were great every time. RIP, Dimebag.

22. Alice Cooper - Chop, Chop, Chop

This is a song about a serial killer who is doing the city a service by killing prostitutes and keeping the city clean. When I saw Alice Cooper live, not only did he not play this song, he didn’t play anything from this album (“Raise Your Fist and Yell”). I have loved this song for 30 years. Cooper gets bonus points for working in the phrase “modus operandi.”

21. Hall & Oates - She’s Gone

Again, could have gone with “Sara Smile” or “You Make my Dreams Come True,” but in my mind, that one time I get drunk enough to do karaoke, it’ll be this song.

20. Violent Femmes - Add it Up

This is one of the only cassettes my original skateboarding buddy had. I learned to ollie to this album. I bought this CD before I owned a CD player and listened to it on other people’s CD players.

19. The Police - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic

It’s true.

18. Urban Dance Squad - Deeper Shade of Soul

Mellow. That’s my style.

17. Live - I Alone

I can’t explain what this song means to me.

16. Slayer - Raining Blood

This song changed everything for me. Everything.

15. Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

Bad timing, my friend.

14. Mr. Mister - Broken Wings

It’s ridiculous, how much I like this song.

13. Elton John - Tiny Dancer

This song was tied with his version of “Pinball Wizard” until Almost Famous came out.

12. Guns N’ Roses - You’re Crazy

Really my favorite song is “this album.”

11. Down - Stone the Crow

Super song from a supergroup.

10. The Sugarcubes - Motorcrash

The same friend that introduced me to Love and Rockets and all those other bands introduced me to the Sugarcubes. I love this album.

Good list, Flack. Awesome to see Slither, Soul Sucking Jerk, and other random stuff.

This sort of things always make me think “well this song sucks but other songs that band did and other stuff in this list are cool”.

Perhaps we should narrow things down a bit like.. “Top 10 The Cure songs” in a new thread. Every time I think about rating all my music I’m overwhelmed.

Re: Flack's Top 125 Songs

One of the three things I've learned from Pinback is that "best of" lists over 10 items are fairly pointless. You can reasonably sort lists of favorite things out to about ten; after that, it's just a collection of stuff you like. That's not to say they aren't fun to make (I thoroughly enjoying putting this one together and sharing it with everyone) but at the end of the day it's pretty rough to argue some of the ordering. After the top 10, I probably like songs #11-#50 about the same.

I am happy to speak at length as to why NHL 98 is better than Tharsis. It matters to me, man.

I mentioned the only one I can repeat in polite company. And now that I think about it, it's four things, not three.
