I plan on getting rid of my motorcycle soon. The one I currently have is too small for my liking (a 650). It's underpowered and I never get a chance to ride it.

Yesterday I pulled it out, cleaned it up, and took it for a spin just to make sure everything was in working order. I rode for around 45 minutes -- 15 minutes to town, 15 minutes around town, and 15 minutes back home.

While I don't care for this particular bike, and while I really don't have room for a bike in my life right now, it dawned on me that I do my best thinking when I'm on a bike.

I wake up in bed next to another person. I get ready for work and either carpool with my wife to work or drive myself and crank the radio. Then, there's work. Then, there's after work, with the wife and kids. Sometimes there are activities and sometimes there aren't, but it's almost always with other people.

For some reason, driving alone in a car is not like riding alone on a bike. Although it sounds backwards, when I'm in a car I'm focusing a lot on traffic. When I'm on a bike, all that goes away and it's just me and the road and the wind. I seem to come up with a ton of great ideas when I'm on the bike. I'm going to miss that.

Better hope the wife doesn't find out about this other person or your driving to work alone is going to become permanent!

No, it's not. While I've never ridden a motorcycle I know what it's like to commute on a bicycle on a daily basis - I was doing some unpaid work at the local college in exchange for using their mainframe - and I couldn't afford bus fare, so I rode 7 miles each way, getting off and walking for the parts uphill, about 2-3 blocks.

When you're on an exposed transport it's very different from being in a steel cage like an automobile, with the air conditioning and the radio playing..

I put away childish things for too many wasted years. Thank the Force I didn't let the rat race abort my inner-child. The older I got the more I missed the lil dude.

As long as we're quoting 2000 year old sacred texts out of context to make our points now here's one from the much older sacred texts the 2000 year old one was based on:
Isaiah 11:6 wrote:The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.
Which reminds me of another great quote from my favorite era of American culture:
