Cyberganked work in progress - running programs

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

The equivalent to spells in Cyberganked will be computer programs.

In combat, running a program is easy - just let the player hit "R" for Run Program and then let them either type in a four-letter code, or give them the option of a numbered list.

Outside of combat, and this is just me brainstorming here, I am thinking I should support these scenarios:

>Worm, run MICH (where MICH is the program "Michelangelo")
(Program then runs)

***

>run mich
Who do you want to run Michelangelo?
1) Worm 2) Flack
>1
(In this case, the game looked over your characters and found that Worm and Flack could run that program. The criteria satisfied is that they knew the program and had a computer equipped)

***

>mich
Who do you want to run Michelangelo?
1) Worm 2) Flack
>1
(Same as above)

***

>run
What program do you want to run?
>mich (Probably not going to support the full name here)
Who do you want to run Michelangelo?
1) Worm 2) Flack
>1

***

.... That's all I can think of so far. Anything obvious that I am missing?

Unless this is automatically remapped from "Worm, run program" by Hugo and therefore already taken care of, there's:

>tell worm to run program

and

>ask worm to run program

How about "List Programs" in which it can tell you what programs are available, and if the issue is critical, who can run what.

If you look at Tripkey one of the things I have is the "Scores" command, it lists all possible things you can do that you can get a score for, how many points its worth, whether you did that, and what your total score is,

I can't believe this could be the end."

That's fucking brilliant.

Jonsey, do this.
I don't have to say anything. I'm a doctor, too.

No real updates. It's been difficult to find time to work on the game recently.

OK, here is why this doesn't really work. I appreciate the suggestion. But:

Cyberganked celebrates games with CGA graphics, in the CGA error.

That was before Windows 95 and the blue screen of death.

Cyberganked can only display four colors: black, white, cyan and magenta. Therefore, in the game, I can't even show blue.

When your characters get down to zero hit points in a fight, as long as someone survived with more than one hit point, the characters at zero get one hit point after the fight.

If everyone gets to zero the game says that you just got your ass cyberganked, and the game ends.

I was speaking to Jim Crawford at CAX the other weekend. He recommended asking the player to do the least amount of typing as possible.

I think that what I will do (outside of combat) is just this:

>run

Who will run a program?

1) Nikos
2) Pinback
3) Flack
4) Walrustitty
5) Bruce
6) Vark

>6

Which program? (? to list)
>?

Vark can run the following programs:

Level 1
Michelangelo (MICH), Donkey.bas (DONK), Spiradisk (SPIR)

>mich

Vark runs Michelangelo and blah blah blah.
